On November 11, 1889, Washington became a state. It is the 42nd of the United States of America. This Northwest state is also known as the Evergreen State. The capital is Olympia. The population according to the last census was 6,724,540 and some of the largest cities include Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, Vancouver, Bellevue, Kent, Everett, Yakima and Federal Way.

You may remember the Mount Saint Helen's eruption in 1980. You may also have heard that the Kennewick Man is the oldest human remains found in North America. Washington has beautiful places to visit. Grand Coulee Dam, one of over a 1,000, is impressive and worth the trip.

Many dams produce hydroelectric power. Lumber production is one of the numerous industries. Farming and commercial fishing is also important economic drivers of the economy. In the southern part, there are several wineries and related services. Washington apples have a worldwide reputation and produce over 50% of the nation’s apples. Over 90% of America’s red raspberries are grown here.
